Custom Figurine vs. Bobblehead vs. Portrait: Which Gift Should You Choose?
Share
If you want to turn a photo into a gift, three options usually come up: a custom 3D figurine, a custom bobblehead and a painted or illustrated portrait. All three are personal. But they look very different, and each suits a different person and occasion.
Custom bobbleheads
What it is: a figure with an oversized head on a spring, usually with a stylized body chosen from a set of templates (a doctor, a golfer, a bride).
Best for: fun, jokey gifts: office parties, retirement gifts, a friend with a big sense of humor.
Keep in mind: the style is cartoonish by design. The face is usually sculpted to resemble the person, but the body and outfit are often generic rather than what they actually wore.
Painted or illustrated portraits
What it is: an artist paints or draws the person from a photo, in oil, watercolor or a digital illustration style.
Best for: people who love art on the walls, and for capturing a scene or background (a house, a landscape, a pet in its favorite spot).
Keep in mind: quality and price depend a lot on the artist, and framing adds to the cost. It is a flat, 2D keepsake.
Custom 3D figurines
What it is: a realistic, full-color miniature of the person, made from a photo and 3D printed, including the actual pose and outfit from the picture.
Best for: sentimental gifts where likeness matters: anniversaries, weddings (as a cake topper), memorials, family gifts, pets.
Keep in mind: the result depends on the photo, so a clear, full-body photo matters. See our guide on which photo to use.

So which should you choose?
- Choose a bobblehead if the goal is to make them laugh.
- Choose a portrait if they love art and have a wall waiting for it.
- Choose a 3D figurine if you want them to see the actual person (or pet) every time they look at it: the real outfit, the real pose, the real smile.
